TL;DR:
Yes, always get a home inspection on a new construction home. Even brand-new houses can have small issues that get missed during the final construction process. An inspection helps identify those items before closing so you move into the best possible finished home.

Should You Get a Home Inspection on a Brand-New Home?
Many buyers assume that if a house is brand new, it shouldn't need a home inspection. After all, everything is new, new framing, new electrical, new plumbing, new HVAC. But the reality is that new construction homes should still be inspected before closing. I recently walked through a home inspection with a client on a newly built house. The builder was reputable and the home was a solid product. But during the inspection, several small items still showed up that needed attention before the buyer moved in.
That situation is extremely common with new construction.
Why Issues Still Show Up in New Construction Homes
When builders finish a home, they typically have a punch list, a list of small items that need
final adjustments or completion before the project is fully finished. During the rush of finishing construction and getting the house ready for the market, some of those items can get overlooked. Most of the time it's not negligence or cutting corners.
It's usually something simple like:
- A trim piece that still needs adjustment
- A door that needs to be aligned
- Paint touch-ups
- Minor plumbing or electrical tweaks
- Caulking or sealing details
These are the kinds of items inspectors often catch before closing.
What Happens If You Skip the Inspection?
If a buyer assumes everything is perfect because the home is new and skips the inspection, those small issues may not get addressed until after the purchase.
An inspection gives you the chance to:
- Identify unfinished items
- Ensure systems are operating properly
- Confirm the home is fully complete
- Create a list for the builder to address before closing
Most builders are happy to fix these items once they're identified.
But they have to be identified first.
A Home Inspection Helps Everyone
Getting an inspection on a new construction home benefits both the buyer and the builder.
For Buyers
- Peace of mind
- Fewer surprises after move-in
- A more complete finished home
For Builders
- A clear punch list
- Happier homeowners
- Fewer warranty calls later
It's simply a smart step in the buying process.
The Bottom Line
Even with a great builder and a high-quality new home, small things can still get missed during construction. That's why the best advice for buyers is simple:
“Always get a home inspection, even on a new construction home.”
It helps ensure you're getting the best possible product before you move in.
